Omega 3-s Against Colon Cancer
You probably know omega-3 fatty acids protect your heart, but new research suggests they may help prevent colon cancer. According to research presented at the American Association for Cancer Research Frontiers in Cancer Prevention Research Conference in December 2009, patients who consumed more long-chain omega-3 fatty acids, which are found in fish and seafood, had a reduced risk of distal large bowel cancer. Surprisingly, say the researchers, the finding was observed in white participants but not in black participants. They were unable to account for the discrepancy and note that further study is needed.
Noting the benefit of decaffeinated coffee, the researchers indicated caffeine is not likely to be the sole ingredient conferring a benefit. Other compounds in tea and coffee, they explain, such as magnesium and antioxidants known as lignans or chlorogenic acids, may be responsible.
