Staying Slim Helps You Stay Sharp
Experts say having a thick waistline can triple your risk of developing dementia later in life. “The connection between belly fat and brain health is complicated,” says Gay Riley, MS, RD, CCN, a personal nutrition coach with NetNutritionist.com. “But there are several things we know. People with increased body fat store toxic waste. Later, these toxins may enter the blood stream and create problems. High levels of circulating insulin can also negatively affect brain function.”
Also, people with a bad-for-the-brain waist measurements tend to have high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and diabetes. “Basically, what’s good for your heart is good for your brain. And people have heard these heart-healthy recommendations before,” says Riley.
The same aerobic exercise that strengthens your heart provides rich oxygen to keep your brain cells functioning at optimal levels. A diet based in fresh fruits and vegetables, along with fish, nuts in their natural form, lentils and beans, whole grains, and plant oils make for a healthy brain diet. “The brain likes a colorful diet, so sprinkle in some vibrant foods like blueberries,” Riley says. “Eggs are a great source of choline needed for myelin sheath formation in the brain. Folic acid, B12, and B6 (found in foods like chicken, fish, eggs, and leafy greens) are all necessary for good brain health as well.”
